New Era of Tucson Sports Radio Dawns with Jay Gonzales Becoming Co-Host with Steve Rivera on “Eye on the Ball” Show

Longtime Tucson media and public relations figure Jay Gonzales, a Sahuaro High School and Arizona grad who has lived his whole life in Tucson, will provide his insights and stories about this town and the Wildcats five days a week now.

The former Arizona Daily Star sports reporter joined Steve Rivera on Friday as a co-host of the “Eye on the Ball” sports-talk radio show on KVOI (1030-AM). The show is weekdays from 6 to 7 p.m.

With Gonzales and Rivera (formerly of The Tucson Citizen and a writer for AllSportsTucson.com) reporting on Arizona and Tucson-area athletics for three to four decades, their knowledge of the history of sports in this town is unmatched.

During Gonzales’ first appearance Friday, the show was all about his memories and most interesting stories, including perhaps him breaking an NCAA violation by taking Sean Elliott out for a pizza after Elliott’s junior season at Arizona to get a more in-depth story from the Cholla and Arizona great.

You can listen to that captivating (and funny) story and many others here from Friday’s show:

One part also includes Gonzales’ story about his dad signing a contract on a piece paper in handwriting to pay for his three sons, including Jay, to travel to Pasadena, Calif., to watch Arizona play in its first Rose Bowl. Of course, that has not yet happened and Gonzales’ dad has unfortunately passed away. Gonzales managed to bring humor to that story during Friday’s show.

We featured Gonzales this week after it became known that the Tucson Sugar Skulls, an Indoor Football League in their second season in Tucson, were forced to lay him off as team president because of the financial constraints resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic:

Gonzales, a freelance writer and editor for BizTucson magazine, also is co-owner with his wife Gabrielle of Arizona Legal Technologies, LLC, a firm that helps local businesses with media and public relations for their operation. As an example, Gonzales mentioned his business is nearing completion on a book for United Way detailing their services.
