Arizona sweeps Utah, hits 30-win mark with ninth straight triumph

Information from Arizona’s media relations department contributed to this report:

Arizona has reached the 30-win plateau for the fifth time in Jay Johnson’s six years as head coach and the only time the Wildcats have not won that many was last year when COVID-19 limited the season to 15 games.

The Wildcats (30-11, 15-6 Pac-12) rolled to a 15-3 victory in the series finale against the Utah on Sunday at Hi Corbett Field to complete their second straight Pac-12 sweep.

They have reached the 30-win mark in just 41 games, marking the fastest an Arizona team has gotten to 30 wins since the 2007 squad opened the year 30-6.

Arizona, which swept USC last week at Hi Corbett, has won nine in a row and six straight conference series. The Wildcats have won nine of their last 10 Pac-12 series and are the first conference team to reach 30 wins.

Starting pitcher Austin Smith, making his third straight start in the third game of a series, worked 3 2/3 innings and allowed just two runs on four hits. Smith (2-0) struck out a career-high seven.

The Wildcats bullpen — represented by Quinn Flanagan, Riley Cooper and Dawson Netz —  combined to hold the Utes (10-26, 5-16) to just one run on three hits while striking out four.

Arizona’s lineup produced 15 runs on 16 hits, seven walks, and two hit batters. Only two of the hits went for extra bases: Jacob Berry’s two-run triple in the bottom of the fourth and Daniel Susac’s solo home run in the fifth.

Top Arizona batters:

  • C Daniel Susac: 3-for-4, run, HR, RBI
  • 1B Branden Boissiere: 3-for-5, 2 runs, 2 RBIs
  • DH Jacob Berry: 2-for-4, 2 runs, 3B, 2 RBIs, walk
  • CF Donta’ Williams: 1-for-2, 3 runs, 3 walks
