Mathurin named Pac-12 Player of the Week

Corvallis, Oregon and Oregon State has been very good for Arizona sophomore Bennedict Mathurin.

He’s combined for 60 points in two games up there, most recently getting 29 on Sunday to help Arizona to a 90-65 win over OSU.

Because of it, he was named the conference’s Player of the Week. It’s the first player of the week honor for the Montreal native, but his second overall weekly award from the conference after being named Freshman of the Week on Jan. 4, 2021. Mathurin is the second Wildcat to be named Pac-12 Player of the Week after Christian Koloko received the honor on Nov. 22.

Arizona leads all Pac-12 schools in all-time player of the week selections with 103. UCLA is second with 80.

In Arizona’s only game last week, Mathurin scored 29 points on 11 of 18 shooting and 4 of 9 from the 3-point line in a 90-65 win at Oregon State on Sunday. He also added six rebounds and the Wildcats were +21 when he was on the floor. It was his fifth 20+ point game of his career and his second this season.

For the season, Mathurin leads Arizona in scoring at 16.0 points per game and is also averaging 6.1 rebounds while shooting 45.3% from the floor.

Arizona has two games on the schedule this week, playing host to undefeated Wyoming on Wednesday (8:00pm MT, Pac-12 Networks ) and traveling to Illinois (3:00pm MT, FOX) on Saturday.
