Sunnyside wrestling great Roman Bravo-Young of Penn State earned his second consecutive Big Ten championship with a 3-1 win Sunday over rival Austin DeSanto of Iowa.
Bravo-Young, the defending NCAA champion at 133 pounds, topped DeSanto in the Big Ten Wrestling Championships at Lincoln, Neb., behind a takedown maneuver with only 30 seconds remaining to break a 1-1 tie.
Bravo-Young is 15-0 this season after posting a 14-0 record last year en route to his first national title.
He has won five straight matches against DeSanto, including last year’s Big Ten title match, after losing the first two against DeSanto by decision in 2019.
“He has pushed me and everyday I’ve worked hard — you have to appreciate and love your opponents too,” Bravo-Young said about DeSanto to the Big Ten Network after the match.
The NCAA wrestling championships will be held at Detroit from March 17-19.
“It’s tough and you’ve gotta find a way to win,” Bravo-Young said of defending his NCAA title. “I’ll enjoy this win. I’m blessed but I have bigger things to finish.”
Bravo-Young was a four-time state champion at Sunnyside who went 182-0 during his career with the Blue Devils.
He is in his fourth and final season with Penn State. Bravo-Young went through Senior Day festivities recently.
Sunnyside coach Anthony Leon told AllSportsTucson.com last week that Bravo-Young has made it a goal to compete for the United States in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
