GAME SUMMARY: Marana coach Don Hawkins’ young team that featured mostly juniors in his starting lineup overwhelmed Parker to end the season unbeaten at 10-0-1.
Seven juniors started on offense, including bruising All-State fullback Cleveland Colter, who rushed for 147 yards on 15 carries and scored a touchdown on a 20-yard run. He also converted four extra-point attempts. A pair of junior ends accounted for four of the Tigers’ six touchdowns — Ken Sherman caught touchdown passes of 23 and 35 yards from quarterback Larry Kilburn while Ray Alexander caught a 36-yard Kilburn TD pass and scored on a 16-yard run.
Marana, which never had to punt, accumulated 277 rushing yards to Parker’s 54 and passed for 124 yards while the Broncs (8-3) had none.
DID YOU KNOW: Colter won four state championships as a senior in 1967-86 — football, basketball, baseball and track — and in addition to being the All-State fullback on Marana’s 1967 championship football team. One of his sons, Cleveland “Cadillac” Colter III, was an All-American at USC and another, Spencer Colter, won a national championship with Colorado in 1990. His grandson, Kain, was a starting quarterback at Northwestern. Cleveland II went on to Phoenix College after completing his Marana career.
