Little League All-Stars: Nogales advances to Arizona Senior League Baseball Championship

Nogales National beat Mesa American 11-1 Monday night in Winslow to advance to the Senior Baseball Championship Game set for Wednesday night at 6 p.m. The West Region Senior League playoffs runs from July 20-27 in Oakland. Nogales (3-0) has outscored opponents 50-5.

In Junior Baseball action, Nogales came back from a 5-0 deficit after the top of the first to run-rule Peoria Rio Vista 18-8 Monday night at Mehl Park. The victory moved Nogales one step closer to the championship series along with Western. Western beat Sunnyside 13-7 Monday night at Curtis Park in the other half of the bracket. Nogales and Western will meet Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at Curtis Park and the winner of that game advances to the state final starting Friday night at Curtis Park.

Down 5-0, Nogales scored four runs in the bottom half of the first and nine more in the second to take a commanding 13-5 lead. The District 8 champion eventually built an 18-5 lead through four but then held on after Rio Vista scored three in the top of the fifth to stay at least 10 runs ahead to bring the run-rule into play.

Diego Gomez had a triple and 3 RBI for Nogales, Ruben Celaya collected 3 doubles and 2 RBI, Ivan Molina had a double and 2 RBI and Xaciel Garcia had a double and 2 RBI. Lane Stillwell led Rio Vista by going 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI.

Jerry Quiroga got the start for Nogales, Molina got the victory and Esteban Vasquez closed the game out. Alex Rodriguez took the ball for Rio Vista, Angel Ochoa got the loss and Isaac Luevano also saw action on the mound.

The team from Peoria moves down to the Elimination Bracket where they will play Mohave Valley Tuesday night at Mehl Park.
