Sunnyside tallied 26 hits, including 16 for extra bases, in its 21-1 win in four innings Friday over Prescott to claim the Arizona State Intermediate (50/70) Tournament championship at Nogales.
Sunnyside, which went 3-0 in the tournament outscoring opponents 46-1, advances to the West Regional at Nogales. That starts Wednesday and runs through July 28.
In the win over Prescott, the top five batters in Sunnyside’s lineup each produced at least three hits:
- Santos Lopez, 5 for 5 with four runs, three RBIs, two doubles and two triples.
- Joshua Valenzuela, 4 for 5 with two runs, four RBIs and four doubles.
- Ezequiel Lorta, 3 for 4, three runs, four RBIs, triple and home run.
- Josue Espinoza, 4 for 4, three runs, four RBIs and two home runs.
- Oscar Quijada, 4 for 4 with four runs, RBI and a home run.
Louis Torres, the No. 9 batter, went 2 for 4 with three runs, three RBIs and two doubles.
Sunnyside utilized four different pitchers with each pitching an inning. Valenzuela, Jacinto Preciado, Torres and Luis Zazueta combined on a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and two walks.
