No. 9 San Manuel had a team rushing effort in its 50-20 win at No. 8 Superior to open the 1A state playoffs after top runner, Mathias Medina, was knocked out of the postseason after suffering a broken leg in last week’s win over Baboquivari to end the regular season.
San Manuel quarterback Ralphie Valencia and Jakob Tafoya each rushed for two touchdowns and Tony Guisa Jr. returned an interception for a touchdown to help the Miners improve to 8-2 — their most wins in a season since 2011 when they finished 8-3.
San Manuel travels to No. 1 Hayden (9-0) on Friday at 7 p.m. for a quarterfinal game.
No. 2 St. David (8-1) hosts a quarterfinal game Friday after enjoying a bye. The Tigers will play No. 7 Bagdad, which defeated No. 10 El Capitan Academy 46-22 on Friday. St. David defeated Bagdad 70-20 at home on Sept. 1.
