Sahuaro to name its football field after legendary coach Howard Breinig

Howard Breinig, who coached Sahuaro to a co-championship the 4A state title game in 1994, will be honored by the school with the football field named after him in a ceremony on Nov. 3 during a home game with Pueblo.

After his career at Arizona as a lineman, spent more than 40 years coaching at the high school level in Southern.

Aside from coaching the co-championship team in 1994, when the Cougars tied Peoria in the title game, Breinig coached three other Sahuaro teams under to runner-up in the state.

Sahuaro was awarded the championship trophy while Peoria coach Doug Clapp agreed to take the runner-up trophy as a showing of respect for Breinig.

Peoria was ultimately given a championship trophy as well.

Breinig earned the title in his 176th and last game of his head coaching career. He coached Rincon/University and Sahuaro from 1976-78 and 1983-94, respectively. He finished 118-53-5.

An intramural heavyweight wrestling champion while at Arizona, he coached Sahuaro to the 1972 5A state wrestling championship. 

His coaching stops included Rincon/University (wrestling and football), Tucson (wrestling), Sahuaro, Sabino (assistant) and Sunnyside (assistant).

Breinig was inducted into the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.
