Pima women victorious on In Honor of Indigenous People Night

The Pima women’s basketball team opened its 2023-24 regular season schedule on Saturday as it took on Community Christian College in the annual In Honor of Indigenous People Night at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.

Seven players scored in double figures as the No. 9-ranked Aztecs defeated the Saints 114-25.

The Aztecs outscored Community Christian 31-4 in the first quarter and led 59-9 at halftime. They didn’t give up double-digit scoring in any of the quarters. Pima shot 52 percent for the game.

Sophomore Dominique Acosta (Nogales) led led the Aztecs with 20 points as she went 9 for 11 from the field and fell short of a double-double with nine rebounds.

·Freshman Rori Hoffmeyer came off the bench and scored 15 points on 7-for-10 shooting and also added six rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Freshman Gabby Lopez (Bisbee) also fell short of a double-double as she posted 14 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Fellow freshman Sage Begay also had 14 points.

Freshman Gabriella Sanchez (Tucson) and sophomore Taina Lee each finished with 12 points while freshman Amelie Buffill-Gutierrez (Sabino) posted 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting with four assists. Freshman Rylei Waugh finished with 10 assists.

The Aztecs will play three games as part of the Eastern Arizona Classic Thursday through Saturday in Thatcher. They will play South Plains College on Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
