2024 Arizona football season countdown: 74 days to kickoff

To get ready for the upcoming Arizona football season, All Sports Tucson offers a countdown, which will include history notes and a look ahead to the season — a good way to keep Arizona football on the mind in the summer months leading up to fall camp in early August and then kickoff against New Mexico on Aug. 31 in the start of the Brent Brennan era.

A LOOK BACK — NO. 74 GLENN PARKER

With it being the 74th day until kickoff between the Lobos and Wildcats, the best player to wear No. 74 for Arizona is offensive lineman Glenn Parker, who played at Arizona in 1988 and 1989 after attending a junior college in California. He excelled despite not playing high school football. He represented Arizona well with 12-year NFL career, followed by local and national broadcasting gigs, including with the Pac-12 Network. He was a third-round draft pick of the Bills in 1990. He tallied 141 starts in his NFL career with Buffalo, the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Giants. He played for the Bills until 1997, playing in all four Super Bowls the team lost from 1990-1993. He then went to play three years for the Chiefs. He was picked up as a free agent by the Giants, where he played two more seasons, and was a part of the Super Bowl XXXV team. In recent years, Parker has coached at Catalina Foothills when his son William played there. He is now the Director of Outreach and Engagement of the University of Arizona Foundation.

NO. 74 IN 2024

Nobody currently on the roster has uniform No. 74.

NOTE

Arizona had three verbal commitments Monday, doubling its amount previously among Class of 2025 prospects. The highest rated of them all is 4-star (Rivals) recruit Wesley Yarbrough, a running back from Crosby, Texas (a suburb of Houston). He has chosen Arizona over Houston, Arizona State and Memphis among others. Yarbrough’s decision came one day after he returned home from Tucson for his official visit. He totaled 1,045 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns in 232 rushes last season at Crosby High School.

THEY SAID IT

“They were genuine and were a family. There is no other coach in college football that has recruited and talked to me like (running backs) coach (Alonzo) Carter has. There is something special is brewing at Arizona.” — Yarbrough said to Rivals of the Wildcats, who are moving to the Big 12, which includes Houston and other Texas schools such as Texas Tech, TCU and Baylor.
