Sunnyside beat San Xavier 12-2 Monday night at Manzanita Park to win the District 12 Junior Baseball Championship. Sunnyside is headed to the State Tournament lasted to start July 8 in Goodyear. Sunnyside will be joined by Flowing Wells, the District 5 champion, and Douglas, the District 8 champion.
Sunnyside scored three runs in the bottom of the first, six in the second and three more in the fourth to take a 12-0 lead. San Xavier scored two runs in the fifth but Sunnyside secured the victory after five innings due to the run-rule.
Andres Valenzuela went the distance for Sunnyside and he collected seven strikeouts while giving up two earned runs. Gael Rivera, Zakary Everson and Jorge Diaz took the mound for San Xavier.
Adrian Shinn and David Blasi collected two RBIs each and Karim Buelna went 2-3 with an RBI to lead Sunnyside at the plate. Everson went 2-2 with an RBI double and Rivera added an RBI double for San Xavier.
