Sunnyside’s Sergio Vega adds to remarkable year with Super 32 138-pound championship

Sergio Vega’s 2024 continues to be one of the best for a high school athlete in Southern Arizona history.

Vega, a senior at Sunnyside High School, added to his prestigious accomplishments by winning the Super 32 Challenge championship at 138 pounds Sunday at the event in Greensboro, N.C.

Vega dominated Dalton Perry of Renovo, Pa., by a major decision of 18-5.

Perry has committed to Penn State while Vega, a 4.0 GPA student, has announced he is bound for Cornell.

Vega’s achievements this year:

— Earned his third straight state championship with Sunnyside in February

— Won the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Nationals title in April

— Finished third at the U20 World Team Trials in June

— Captured the USA Wrestling’s Fargo (N.D.) Junior Freestyle National Championships over Drew Gorman of Buford, Ga., in July

— Beat Gorman, a Virginia Tech commit, again in the Who’s Number One folkstyle event in September

He also earned a title at the Reno Tournament of Champions last December and reached the Super 32 finals last year, defeating Ohio State freshman Ben Davino in the process.
