Nogales’ Simpson fourth Southern Arizona player to earn state player of year nomination

Nogales senior running back/athlete Johanna Simpson tallied 146 yards on five carries with four touchdowns and also had a 50-yard touchdown reception in a 39-0 win over Palo Verde in Week 7 of competition.

For her performance, Simpson is the fourth player from Southern Arizona to earn an Arizona High School Flag Football Player of the Year Award Nomination Medallion from the Arizona Sports & Entertainment Commission and its managed entity, the Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club.

The previous players from Southern Arizona to earn nominations:

Marana junior Malaysia Roebuck in Week 4

She gained 109 yards on six catches with two touchdowns while adding three tackles, two pass breakups and an interception in Marana’s 35-0 win over Valley Vista.

Casa Grande sophomore Kayla Tacker and Buena freshman Deztany Toyota-Villalobos in Week 5

Tacker, a quarterback/safety/receiver, had five catches for 137 yards and four touchdowns in a 63-6 win over Palo Verde. She also had four solo tackles, four interceptions returned for a total of 95 yards, four defended passes and two punt returns for 25 yards.

Toyota-Villalobos, listed as an athlete and running back, had three touchdowns in a 28-0 win over Desert Sunrise. She scored on a carry of 25 yards and receptions of 15 and 10 yards.
