Sahuarita sophomore quarterback Rasheed Martin played in only the first half of the Mustangs’ 49-12 rout over visiting Amphitheater on Friday. That’s all they needed from the young talent.
Martin completed 7 of 11 passes — with five of the completions touchdowns — for 226 yards in the win that improved Sahuarita’s record to 6-3 overall and 5-0 in the 4A Gila. Martin also rushed 30 yards on three carries.
Amphi entered the game still vying for the region title (the Panthers finished 5-5 and 4-2).
Sahuarita’s victory sets up a showdown for the region title with visiting Douglas (5-4, 5-0) on Friday at 7 p.m. Both teams enter on five-game win streaks.
For his performance, Martin is the Week 11 APS Digital Print/Frog & Firkin Player of the Week.
Martin and Sahuarita coach Jake Allen will each receive a banner honoring the player of the week selection.
Allen, in his first year as the head coach, has resurrected the program that was 0-10 in 2022 and 2-8 last season.
APS Digital Print is owned by relatives and close family friends of former Salpointe standout Bijan Robinson, now with the Atlanta Falcons.
