Pima women fall short in first game of pool play at NJCAA Division II tournament

The No. 6 Pima Community College women’s soccer team lost 3-1 on Sunday to No. 3 Heartland (Ill.) Community College in Pool C play at the NJCAA Division II national tournament at Huntsville, Ala.

Pima (12-5) will complete the Pool C schedule Monday when the Aztecs play No. 10 Pensacola (Fla.) State College at 2:15 p.m., Tucson time.

Trailing 2-0 against Heartland, Pima got on the board in the 60th minute when sophomore Camila Razcon (Marana) scored inside the box off an assist from Solaris Graves (Ironwood Ridge).

The Hawks (19-1-1) scored first in the 19th minute with a goal by Valentina Bernal.

Heartland went up 2-0 in the 57th minute when Floor Assmann scored in the box.

The Hawks went ahead 3-1 when Bernal scored her second goal in the 72nd minute.

The Aztecs finished with three shots on goal while the Hawks had eight.

Freshman goalie Phoebe Knisley (Canyon del Oro) had five saves.
