MEJIA ASSIGNED TO DOUBLE-A AFTER ONE TRIPLE-A START
One day after former Sahuarita right-hander Ian Mejia drew praise on social media for his promotion from Double-A to Triple-A by the Atlanta Braves, he was re-assigned to the Double-A Columbus (Ga.) on Thursday.
The move was predicated by the Braves assigning fellow right-hander Blake Burkhalter transferred from Columbus to Triple-A Gwinnett (Ga.).
In Mejia’s lone start for Gwinnett on Tuesday, he took the loss, pitching four innings in the Stripers’ 8-1 defeat against Indianapolis. He allowed five hits and four runs (two earned) and struck out three with four walks.
Through 14 games with Columbus, including10 starts, he has a 1.96 ERA over 78 innings. He has 60 strikeouts and only 21 walks.
This was his second promotion to Triple-A by the Braves only to return to Double-A shortly thereafter. He made one appearance last season in Triple-A, allowing five earned runs over 1 1/3 innings.
Mejia, who redshirted with Arizona as a freshman in 2019 and pitched for Pima College in 2020, was drafted out of New Mexico State by the Braves in the 11th round of the 2022 draft and signed for $100,000.
