Willcox beat Queen Creek 1-0 Wednesday afternoon to win the 8-10 state softball championship held in Cottonwood. Willcox went 4-0 to win the District 8 championship held in June and then the team went 5-1 at the state tournament, with the one loss coming against Queen Creek Wednesday morning to setup the “If Game” later in the day.
Willcox beat Queen Creek 11-1 on Monday, forcing Queen Creek to comeback through the Elimination Bracket to challenge Willcox again. Delilah M. led the game off with a double and then took third and home on passed balls to give Willcox the 1-0 lead that held up the rest of the way. Delilah went 2-2 and Callie L. picked up 12 strikeouts and only gave up two hits with no walks for the victory. There is no regional tournament for this level.
