Thornydale (8-1) beat Honolulu 9-6 on Saturday to win the first game of the Little League Softball West Regional taking place in San Bernardino. The team from Arthur Pack will take on Westchester-Del Rey (Southern California) on Sunday at 3 p.m. (ESPN+).
Kenzie Scott went the distance for Thornydale and she collected six strikeouts from the circle but Honolulu scored four runs in the top of the sixth to make things close. None of the six runs from Honolulu were earned, however.
Thornydale scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning after Tristyn Pogue knocked in Lilly Steffl and Sophia Rodriguez with the bases loaded with two outs. Honolulu cut the score down to 2-1 in the top of the third but Paisley Perkins doubled in Isabelle Audelo in the bottom half of the inning to make it 3-1 and then Scott brought in Perkins to make it 4-1.
Honolulu scored a run in the top of the fifth to make it 4-2 but Thornydale exploded for five runs to make it 9-2. Scott doubled in Perkins, Autumn Smith and Kylee Scott to make it 7-2 and then Kenzie Scott scored on a passed ball. Aubrey Neighbors scored on a error later in the inning to make it 9-2.
Honolulu scored four unearned runs in the sixth for the 9-6 final. Kenzie Scott went 2-3 with a double and four RBIs, Perkins went 3-3 with a double and an RBI, Rodriguez went 2-3 and Pogue went 2-2. As a team, Thornydale only struck out once.
Here in Sierra Vista, Rincon advanced to the 8-10 State Baseball championship game to be played Sunday morning against Cactus Foothills of Cave Creek. Cactus Foothills beat Rincon 7-6 on Wednesday to send the team from Purple Heart Park to the Elimination Bracket where Rincon won three straight elimination games to get to Sunday where they will have to beat Cactus Foothills twice under the double-elimination format. There are no regional tournaments at this level of play.
