Sunnyside beat Dixie Little League of St. George, Utah 3-1 on Monday to advance in the elimination bracket of the Junior League West Region taking place in Bend, Ore., this week. The team from Mission Manor Park will play Mark West Little League of Santa Rosa, Calif., next on Tuesday.

Sunnyside will have to win two more games to get to the championship game slated for Thursday. There is no double-elimination at this regional so it will be winner-take-all. Hawaii and Southern California are still alive in the winner’s bracket and those two teams will clash tomorrow.

Rodolfo Carbajal got the win over Utah with four strikeouts, three hits and no earned runs in his complete-game effort.

Sunnyside also struggled at the plate with nine strikeouts and only two hits, but they turned out to be the difference. The score remained 0-0 until the top of the sixth when David Blasi singled to lead off and then Alain Lara picked up a single one out later. Humberto Rodriguez was walked but Blasi scored on an error, Lara stole home and then Rodriguez scored on another error. Utah scored one run in the bottom of the seventh for the 3-1 final.
