NOTES

— Former Arizona infielder and pitcher Bobby Dalbec reportedly might be heading to Japan after opting out of his minor-league contract Saturday with the Milwaukee Brewers to become a free agent. The move to Japan would likely occur if Dalbec does not sign with another major-league club. Dalbec started the 2025 season as a minor leaguer with the Chicago White Sox. After getting called up in April, Dalbec played in seven games, hitting .222 while playing at first base, third base and shortstop. The White Sox designated Dalbec for assignment in May. He opted for free agency and then signed his deal with the Brewers. The Red Sox selected Dalbec in the fourth round of the 2016 MLB Draft out of Arizona. He became a top-100 prospect before making his big-league debut in 2020. Dalbec belted eight home runs with 16 RBIs in just 23 games as a rookie. Dalbec played in 133 games in 2021, setting career highs with 25 home runs and 78 RBIs with the Red Sox. In 2022, Dalbec hit just .215 in 117 games with 12 home runs and 39 RBIs. The 30-year-old played sporadically for the Red Sox the next two seasons, bottoming out last season with a .133 batting average in 37 games. Boston outrighted Dalbec off the roster last September, clearing the way for him to sign as a free agent with the White Sox last winter. Dalbec never got called up by the Brewers despite hitting an impressive .266/.356/.498 in 61 games at the club’s Triple-A affiliate in Nashville. That’s likely due to the emergence of Andrew Vaughn, who the Brewers acquired from the White Sox in the deal that sent Aaron Civale to Chicago earlier this summer.

— Two former Wildcats were promoted Tuesday — third baseman Tony Bullard and right-handed starter T.J. Nichols. Bullard went from Double-A Pensacola (Fla.) to Triple-A Jacksonville (Fla.) in the Miami Marlins organization and Nichols advanced from Single-A+ Bowling Green (Ky.) to Double-A Montgomery (Ala.) in the Tampa Bay Rays organization. Bullard’s OPS (on-base percentage and slugging percentage) with Pensacola was an impressive .837 and Nichols’ WHIP (walks/hits per nine innings) was only 1.09 with Bowling Green. He was also 10-3 with a 3.63 ERA with 119 strikeouts and 21 walks in 96 2/3 innings.

— No home runs belted for any Southern Arizona high school alum or former Arizona player on Tuesday night, but plenty of pitchers stood out. Former Wildcat pitchers Jackson Kent, Aiden May, Dawson Netz, Chase Silseth, Austin Smith and Avery Weems did not allow an earned run in their respective appearances in a total of 15 2/3 innings. Kent, of Single-A+ Wilmington (Del.) of the Washington Nationals organization, had the most impressive outing, allowing only one hit in six innings with two walks and five strikeouts in a 3-1 victory over Aberdeen (Md.) IronBirds of the Baltimore Orioles organization.
