The Post 7 Tucson Moondogs beat New Mexico 10-2 on Friday at the American Legion West Region taking place in Fairfield, California. The victory kept the team from Tucson High (Arizona) alive while eliminating the team from Eldorado, New Mexico.
Tucson (2-1) will face California (3-0) Saturday at 7 p.m. with the team from Petaluma beating Hawaii 10-4 late Friday night. Hawaii (2-1) will face Texas (2-1) in the other semifinal game with Texas eliminating Nevada 11-1 Friday morning.
In the elimination victory over New Mexico, Tucson scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning to put the game away early. Andrew Hendrick (4.2 innings pitched) picked up five strikeouts and Louie Rodriguez (2.1) added another. Essar Valenzuela had a home run with three RBIs, Marcelo Carpio went 2-2 with two doubles and three RBIs and Robby Sirk went 2-3 with a double and three more RBIs. As a team, Tucson collected 10 walks and did not strike out.
The Moondogs are comprised of players from Tucson High and the team is representing the state of Arizona at the region. The “Moondogs” are named after former Badger and Arizona Wildcat Chris Moon.
