
TUSD Girls Volleyball Invitational
August 29-30: Tucson High
Catalina Foothills went 6-0 to win the championship of the TUSD Volleyball Invitational held Friday and Saturday at Tucson High School. The Falcons faced Tanque Verde in the final after the Hawks knocked off Rincon/University in the elimination bracket to make it back to the championship match Saturday afternoon.
Alivia Sutton led the Falcons with an unofficial six kills in the championship match with Zoe Brown and Melanie Strunk combining for 14 assists in the two sets played in the final. Lauren Strada had eight assist for Tanque Verde and Delaney Mikkelson collected five kills.
The Falcons jumped out to a 13-3 lead in the first set before taking It 25-17 but the second set played closer with the Falcons pulling away from a late 19-16 lead to win the deciding set 25-18.
Catalina Foothills is 6-1 on the year after opening up the season with a 3-0 loss to 4A power Mica Mountain (2-0). The Falcons will host Notre Dame Prep next Thursday and Tanque Verde has a longer break and the Hawks will host Sahuaro on Sept. 8.
NOTES:
The Salpointe Lancer Invitational will be played at Sporting Chance from Sept. 19-20 and the Flowing Wells Nymeyer Classic will be played at Amphitheater High School due to upgrades taking place at the Caballero main gymnasium.
Ironwood Ridge went 4-5 at the Hawai’i Island Labor Day Classic held in Hilo, Hawai’i.
