The Pima Community College women’s soccer team had a strong performance in its 5-1 victory over Chandler-Gilbert Community College at the West Campus Aztec Field on Tuesday night.
Ranked No. 10 nationally, the Aztecs (6-1-4, 6-0-3 ACCAC) scored three unanswered goals in the second half to secure the win and sweep their regular season series against the Coyotes (3-6, 3-5).
Pima also defeated Chandler-Gilbert 3-0 on Sept. 9 in Chandler.
Freshman Yajaira Cervantes (Tucson High) played a key role in setting up both first-half goals. Sophomore Samantha Mendez (Tucson) opened the scoring in the 6th minute, and Ashley Martinez (Sunnyside) followed with a goal in the 10th minute to make it 2-0.
Chandler-Gilbert cut the lead in half in the 58th minute with a goal from Alivia Waite, but the Aztecs quickly responded. Mendez struck again in the 66th minute, recording her second goal of the game off Cervantes’ third assist of the day.
The Aztecs closed strong, adding two late goals. Savannah Michel (Walden Grove) netted her first goal of the season in the 86th minute, and Marissa Garate (Tucson) sealed the victory with a goal a minute later, assisted by Ava Dagnino (Salpointe).
Pima dominated offensively, finishing with 16 shots on goal while holding the Coyotes to just four. Goalkeeper Brooke Valencia (Sabino) recorded three saves, and freshman Angelina Moraga (Sabino) closed the second half without facing a shot on target.
The Aztecs return home Thursday for a non-conference matchup against Cochise College at the West Campus Aztec Field. Kickoff is set for 5:45 p.m.
