- Arizona Suffers First Loss After 3-0 Start: The Wildcats’ football team lost their first game of the season at No. 14 Iowa State 39-14 after playing the first three games at home. The game turned out to be the worst for Arizona, which only lost twice more in the regular season.
High School Sports
- Football Teams Have Impressive Starts: Desert View and Flowing Wells started the season 5-0 after each team suffered losing seasons the year before. Flowing Wells’ start was the best in 10 years.
- Desert View’s Jaylee Abraham Emerges As A Star: Abraham, a sophomore, earned an Ed Doherty Award nomination medallion after he rushed 18 times for 222 yards and four touchdowns, adding another 20 yards on two receptions, in a 54-26 win over Mountain View on Sept. 19.
Other Developments
- Legendary Tucson Baseball Coach Oscar Romero Passes Away: Oscar Romero, 65, passed away on Sept. 6, leaving behind a significant impact on the community. From 1983 to 2018, Romero coached at Tucson High, first as an assistant coach when the Badgers won back to back state championships in 1987 and 1988, and later leading his own Badger teams as head coach to two state runner up finishes, ending his career with 488 victories. Oscar also coached American Legion baseball under commissioner Bud Grainger from 1985 to 2018, leading his teams to nine state championships. His 2007 team won the Western Region Championship in Salt Lake City and finished third at the World Series in Bartlesville, Okla. Romero also served as Tucson High’s head golf coach from 1988 to 2011, and he was also an esteemed biology teacher at the school.
