Top Southern Arizona sports stories of 2025: October

Top Southern Arizona sports stories of 2025:

Arizona Athletics

  • Arizona Loses Three of Four Games: Brent Brennan’s team had a 1-3 stretch, losing the last two games of October, but they were quality losses — in double-overtime against BYU at Casino del Sol Stadium and by a last-second field goal at Houston.

    High School Sports

    • Desert View Caps Perfect Regular Season: Desert View’s football team finished unbeaten at the end of the regular season for the first time following a 41-23 victory over playoff-bound Flowing Wells on Oct. 30. Earlier in the month, the Jaguars broke the scoring record with a 70-35 victory over Cienega, a game in which they clinched their first region title since 1987.
    • Mica Mountain Golfer Wins State Title: Tyla Greenwood took 25th place in her freshman season but that was long ago, in a different time and a very different place. Mica Mountain competed in Division III in 2023 as a new program with low numbers and Greenwood was the only girl in the playoff rotation for the Thunderbolts but she was good, very good. Greenwood was one of several girls in the state to finish in the top 25 in the coed conference and her team took fourth place. Now, as a senior, Greenwood has a medal to prove she is the best Division II golfer in the state of Arizona after the senior beat the field by two strokes to claim the individual championship.
    • Marana QB Breaks 8,000 Career Passing Yards: Marana senior Colten Meyer became the third quarterback from Southern Arizona to break 8,000 career passing yards after throwing for 439 yards in a 48-20 victory over Mountain View on Oct. 24.
    • Pueblo Wins Last Seven Games: The Warriors, under second-year coach Sly Lewis, capped a seven-game unbeaten run to end the season with a 48-0 win over Empire on Oct. 31 to complete the season.
    • Mica Mountain Continues Turnaround under Jay Campos: After starting 2-2, defending 4A state champion won its last six games in the regular season to enter the postseason 8-2 under new head coach Jay Campos.
    • Palo Verde Earns First Winning Season Since 2009: The last time Palo Verde experienced a winning season its current freshmen and many of its sophomores were not yet born. The year was 2009, so long ago that Mike Stoops was the head coach at Arizona. Palo Verde finished 11-2 that year under Todd Mayfield after advancing to the state playoff semifinals. Jamal Chatman was in his first season as an assistant coach at Greely High School in Cumberland, Maine. Chatman, in his fourth season as Palo Verde’s head coach, led the Titans to a 6-3 record after a 21-16 win over Bisbee on Oct. 24, assuring the program its first winning season since 2009.

    Other Developments

    • Visa Issues Delay Tucson Baseball Team From Playing at Kino: Plans to revive professional baseball in Tucson were thrown off course after the Tucson Baseball Team, a newly relocated Mexican Pacific League franchise, postponed its season opener at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium Oct. 16-19 due to visa complications for its players and staff. The postponement marked another setback for Tucson baseball fans, coming just days after the Arizona Fall League’s highly anticipated tripleheader at Kino Stadium on Oct. 11 was canceled due to Hurricane Priscilla.
