Pima lost to Scottsdale 67-61 in December, in game where the Aztecs went 0-6 from three and 17-28 from the line, but head coach Todd Holthaus also drew attention to the 29 turnovers his squad committed on the road that night. The team still had difficulties with two dozen turnovers in a very wild game Wednesday night at home but the difference in shooting and team play gave the Aztecs a decisive 72-55 victory over the Artichokes in the revenge game with the rubber match set for Feb. 7 in Scottsdale.

Pima (13-4, 4-3) also rebounded from a 71-60 loss to Mesa (12-3, 6-0) last week and the Aztecs will take on Phoenix College (7-8, 4-2) on Saturday.

Former Mesquite standout Vanessa Sepulveda torched the Aztecs for 19 points in the loss but the reserve guard was held to seven points Wednesday night. Picking up the slack for the Artichokes was former O’Connor standout Savannah Helms who finished with 12 points on four three-pointers. Pima led 12-5 early on but Scottsdale went on a 13-2 run to take an 18-14 lead with 9:53 left in the second quarter.

Lucy Land entered the mix for the Aztecs and her first long-range shot put the Aztecs up 23-20 with 4:15 left and her second put her team back up 28-26 with 2:41 left. “She’s been struggling lately,” Holthaus said on Land. “I gave her props in the locker room because she’s a kid who works her tail off. The last couple of days of practice she hasn’t missed so I knew tonight she was ready to go.”

Helms hit three deep shots in a row late in the third quarter but the Aztecs weren’t phased and each make was matched by a three from Ahdiayh Chee and buckets from Land and Lucy Fisher. The Aztecs traded punch for punch when the Artichokes needed to make a run but it never came.

Kiley Sours-Miller led the Aztecs with 19 points, Melicia Nelson had 11 and Reigne Waugh and Land scored 10 each. Mia Davis scored a game-high 21points for Scottsdale and Helms had her 12 points.

Pima 89, Scottsdale 46

The Pima men “struggled” in an 84-80 win at Scottsdale on Dec. 17 even though five players ended the night in double figures including 29 from Mason Hunt. There were very little struggles this time with the Aztecs beating the Artichokes 89-46 Wednesday night at home to move to 18-0 overall and 7-0 in conference play while Scottsdale fell to 9-9 and 3-4.

Pima led 14-0 with 14:43 left in the first half and the game was basically over at that point with a 50-25 lead at the half. Isaiah Hill had 17 points, Will Feagles added 15, Rowan McKenzie had 14 and Taevean Famutimi-Brown scored 13. Defense proved to be the difference this time with Quincy Kirk scoring 12 points and Conway Cummard scoring nine.

Pima will host Phoenix College (8-10, 0-6) Saturday at 4 p.m.
