Flowing Wells football head coach Brian Hook has announced he is retiring from coaching to “focus my time and attention on my family and myself.”

“My plan is to continue working as a teacher/strength coach at Flowing Wells while spending cherished time with loved ones,” he mentioned in a statement.  “I believe that you are all so lucky to play football for FWHS and I know that I have been so lucky to be your coach for the past 4 years.”

Hook, a coach overall for 22 years, was 18-23 in his four years as the Caballeros’ head coach. He was 12-9 over the last two seasons that included a 6-0 start this season, the program’s best start in 10 years.

Flowing Wells, behind prolific running back Jayden Simmons, advanced to the 5A state playoffs for the first time since 2018, losing to Phoenix Mountain Pointe in the first round.

Before he became the head coach, Hook served on the staff of former Flowing Wells coach Mark Brunenkant for nine seasons as the offensive coordinator until Brunenkant resigned to become the school’s athletic director in 2019-20.

“I would like to send a sincere thank you for all of the support and memories over the years,” Hook stated.  “I wish you all nothing but the best moving forward.  I am excited about what the future holds for Flowing Wells Football and look forward to being a supporter of the program.  Go Cabs!”

The opening at Flowing Wells follows others locally at Rincon/University, Buena, Casa Grande, Empire, Tombstone, Santa Rita and Willcox.

Joe Thomas has departed from Buena to fill the vacancy at Casa Grande.

Greg McKinstry, formerly the head coach at Catalina and Catalina Foothills, is the new coach at Empire.

Cam Gaddis is a top candidate to become the head coach at Santa Rita, his alma mater.
