Catalina Foothills made it to the 5A semifinal round last year, losing to eventual state championship team Canyon View 58-48 at home. The Falcons were ranked No. 2 and Canyon View was No. 3. Canyon View beat No. 1 Kellis 44-40 in the championship final. The Falcons lost playmaker Clara-Mae Hager to Concordia Moorhead and inside standout Mercy Martinez to Adams State where she is an outside hitter on the volleyball team. It was a huge loss but head coach Jake Martinez found a way to regroup and reload with more of a complete team approach.

The No. 5 Falcons beat No. 21 Canyon del Oro 63-27 at home Wednesday night to improve to 11-2 in ranking games and 5-0 in the 5A Sonoran Region and the Dorados are now 6-7 and 3-2 under head coach Chris Garcia. Garcia played basketball for Canyon del Oro and he has the Dorados climbing higher each year, especially after the program was moved up from 4A to 5A two seasons ago.

The Dorados kept things close in the first quarter but the Falcons extended a 14-7 lead to 31-12 at the half and 57-25 after three. Canyon del Oro standout Gianna Kokoskie led her team with 12 points and the Falcons had five players in double figures. Sophia Dodd had 13, Abigail Peterson had 12, Jaidyn Saucedo had 12, added Kayanna Chief 11 and Jamie Meyer scored 10.

The two teams will meet again at Canyon del Oro Friday night. The Falcons are ranked No. 16 in the Open Division and the Dorados are fighting for a spot in the 5A Play-In Tournament scheduled for Feb. 19.
