Pima Community College freshman Elizabeth Ugwu, a Sahuaro graduate, broke the school record in the shot put as she took first place with a throw of 13.13 meters (43-feet, 1-inch) on her third attempt in Saturday’s CAC Invitational at Central Arizona College.

Her mark broke Becky Levi’s previous record of 43-0 set in 1982. It also gave her a national qualifying mark.

The No. 15 ranked Aztecs also had two new NJCAA national qualifying marks and an improved qualifier in Saturday’s meet.

Freshman Cayla Jones (Cienega) earned a national qualifier in the triple jump as she took second place with a mark of 11.44 meters (37-6.50) on her third attempt. It put her eighth on the Pima all-time list.

Sophomore Kymia Bridgett improved on her national qualifier in the triple jump as she took first place with a mark of 12.11 meters (39-8.75). She moved into the second spot on the Pima indoor records list. She had previously set her qualifier at 12.02 meters (39-5.50).

The Aztecs will next compete at the GCC Indoor Multi’s on Friday and the GCC Invitational on Saturday in Glendale.
