No. 21 Pima baseball splits doubleheader with Cochise to start 7-2

The Pima Community College baseball team split a doubleheader Tuesday at the West Campus Aztec Field against non-conference opponent Cochise College.

The No. 21 Aztecs (7-2) had one run and three hits in the first game but bounced back in the second game to earn the split with the Apaches (3-1).

Sophomore Jackson Glueck went 2 for 5 with two RBIs in the two games while fellow sophomore Leon Cereceres was 2 for 7 with a run. Sophomore Shawn Barros (Salpointe) took the loss in the first game and freshman Jesse Neretlis got the win in the second game.

Game 1: Cochise 5, (21) Pima 1

The Aztecs got on the board in the first inning but had just one hit and three walks the rest of the game.

Cochise College scored two runs in the top of the first inning and never relinquished the lead.

Former Cienega standout outfielder Anthony Montez went 2 for 4 with an RBI for Cochise.

Glueck hit an RBI single in the first inning to score Cereceres, who led off the inning with a single for Pima.

Glueck finished the game 1 for 3 with an RBI while Cereceres was 1 for 4 with a run. Freshman Damian Lorta (Desert View) went 1 for 2 with a walk.

Barros took the loss as he pitched four innings, giving up four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and four walks on 98 pitches.

Game 2: (21) Pima 4, Cochise 2: The Aztecs took the lead and halted a Cochise rally in the seventh inning to earn the win.

Freshman Adriel Figueroa-Brito put the Aztecs on the board in the third inning with an RBI single that scored sophomore Ramon Martinez.

The Aztecs tacked on two more in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, freshman Aciel Guillen (Salpointe) hit a two-run RBI double to score Lorta and freshman Cooper Kruk (Catalina Foothills) to make it 3-0.

Martinez led off the sixth inning with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Glueck to put Pima up 4-0.

The Apaches scored two runs in the seventh inning but sophomore Diego Garcia (Salpointe) was able to put the game away and earn the save.

Guillen finished 2 for 2 with two RBIs while Martinez went 1 for 2 with two runs. Figueroa was 1 for 3 with an RBI and Glueck was 1 for 2 with an RBI. Lorta and Kruk each finished 1 for 4 with a run.

Neretlis picked up the win as he pitched six innings, giving up two runs on three hits with eight strikeouts and three walks on 90 pitches. Garcia got his first save of the season, pitching one inning, giving up two hits.

The Aztecs will open ACCAC play on Saturday when they host Mesa in a doubleheader at Aztec Field. First game starts at noon.
