The Pima Community College baseball team split its doubleheader with Glendale at the West Campus Aztec Field on Tuesday.
Pima (22-21, 14-16 ACCAC) played in its eighth ACCAC split this season, losing the first game 5-3 and winning the second game 6-2 against Glendale (25-19, 14-14).
Freshman Adriel Figueroa-Brito went 4 for 7 with two RBIs and a run in the two games. Freshman Cooper Kruk (Catalina Foothills) and sophomore Jackson Glueck each homered.
Freshman Braxton Bjur took the loss and sophomore Quintin Hennesy picked up a win on the mound.
Game 1: Glendale 5, Pima 3: The Aztecs rallied and cut into the deficit but couldn’t overtake the lead in their loss to Glendale.
Trailing 2-0, the Aztecs got on the scoreboard in the third inning. Figueroa-Brito hit an RBI double to score freshman Juan Hernandez (Tucson).
The Gauchos scored two runs in the fourth inning but Kruk led off the bottom half of the inning with a home run to center field on the first pitch as Pima trailed 4-2.
Figueroa-Brito hit his second RBI double of the game in the fifth inning, bringing around sophomore Leon Cereceres to put the score at 4-3. The Gauchos tacked on a run in the sixth inning. The Aztecs stranded four runners on base.
Figueroa-Brito finished the game 2 for 3 with two RBIs while Kruk went 2 for3 with an RBI and a run. Hernandez was 1 for 3 with a run.
Bjur (1-1) took the loss as he pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on nine hits with one strikeout and one walk on 98 pitches.
Game 2: Pima 6, Glendale 2: The Aztecs took the lead with four runs in the sixth inning as Hennesy produced another quality start.
Figueroa-Brito and Glueck hit back-to-back singles to lead off the sixth inning. Freshman Damian Lorta (Desert View) knocked in Figueroa-Brito with his RBI single to tie the game at 2. Sophomore Matt MacDonald followed with his RBI double to drive in Glueck. Two batters later, freshman Ezra Vidal (Sahuarita) hit an RBI single to left field, which scored Lorta and MacDonald putting the Aztecs up 5-2.
Glueck hit a solo homer in the first inning and had an RBI double in the seventh inning to finish 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs. MacDonald was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run while Figueroa-Brito went 2 for 4 with a run. Lorta finished 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run. Vidal closed it out going 1 for 1 with two RBIs.
Hennesy improved to 3-0 on the season after he pitched six innings, giving up two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks on 84 pitches.
The Aztecs will return to the West Campus Aztec Field on Tuesday, when they take on South Mountain in an ACCAC doubleheader. First game starts at 12:00 p.m.
