Regen Mazura’s complete-game shutout lifts No. 1 CDO to win over No. 16 Paradise Valley

5A FIRST ROUND

No. 1 Canyon del Oro 8, No. 16 Paradise Valley 0

CDO senior left-hander Regen Mazura pitched a complete-game shutout and freshman Bostyn Dart went 3 for 3 with two RBIs to lead the host Dorados (25-5) over Paradise Valley (17-12) on Saturday.

Mazura (9-0) allowed only two hits, struck out 10 and had one walk. He also went 2 for 2 with a double, RBI and three runs.

Junior Brayden Hoyler and senior Peyton Carson each had RBI doubles.

Next: CDO will host No. 8 Scottsdale Desert Mountain (17-11) on Monday at 4 p.m. in a second round game of the winners’ bracket,

No. 2 Catalina Foothills 7, No. 15 Buckeye Youngker 4

Catalina Foothills (21-6) held off a late three-run rally in the seventh inning by Youngker (18-11) to advance.

The Falcons were led by senior Evan Messenger’s three RBIs and senior Yaxel Ledezma going 2 for 3 with an RBI double. Junior Alec Olivas also went 2 for 3 with a run.

Paden Good (6-2) earned the victory, allowing five hits and one run in 4 1/3 innings. He also had five strikeouts and a walk.

Next: Catalina Foothills will host No. 7 Nogales (20-8) at 6 p.m. on Monday in a second round game of the winners’ bracket. The Falcons lost to Nogales 8-7 on Feb. 27 in an early-season tournament at Phoenix.

No. 7 Nogales 9, No. 10 Buckeye Verrado 8, 8 innings

Junior Daniel Cerezo hit a bases-loaded single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift Nogales to the victory over Verrado (19-7-1).

Consecutive singles by Senior Diego Gomez and senior JP Tapia and a fielder’s choice ground out by sophomore Diego Peral left runners on first and second with two outs in the eighth inning.

Junior Andres Lopez hit a single to load the bases before Cerezo connected with his walk-off hit.

The lead changed four times in the game. Verrado tied it at 8 in the top of the seventh with two runs.

Nogales tallied 17 hits, led by Tapia’s 3-for-4 performance at the cleanup spot. He had a run, double and RBI.

Junior Xaciel Garcia, senior Nico Bernal, senior Stevie Vasquez, Gomez, Peral, Lopez and Cerezo each had two hits.

Senior Manny De La Cruz (6-2) earned the win in five innings of relief. He allowed four hits with two earned runs with five strikeouts and no walks.

Next: Nogales travels to Catalina Foothills on Monday for the second-round matchup in the winners’ bracket.

4A FIRST ROUND

No. 2 Salpointe 11, No. 15 Cholla 0, 5 innings

Junior Zachary Peura hit a grand slam and finished with five RBIs to lead Salpointe (20-8) in its 11-hit attack against Cholla (12-8).

Senior Anthony Milo went 2 for 2 with a run, double and RBI. Sophomore Emil Martinez was 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs. Junior Adrian Villela added a two-run single.

Senior Jacob Badilla (6-1) earned the win, pitching 4 1/3 innings of shut-out ball. He allowed five hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

Cholla was led by senior Ryan Robles, who was 1 for 3 with a stolen base.

Next: Salpointe will host No. 7 Cave Creek Cactus Shadows (18-5) on Monday at 4 p.m. in a second-round game of the winners’ bracket. Cholla’s season is over.

No. 5 Douglas 14, No. 12 Yuma 4, 6 innings

Senior Jose Ivan Higuera, freshman Dylan Valenzuela, and senior Andres Hoyos each had two RBIs to lead Douglas (20-8) in the run-rule win over Yuma (16-10-2).

Sophomore Trase Rodriguez went 2 for 2 with three runs and an RBI double.

Higuera was 2 for 3 with three runs and a double.

Junior Isidro Hoyos (6-1) was the winning pitcher.

Next: Douglas will play No. 4 Scottsdale Saguaro (20-7) on Monday at 4 p.m. at Tempe Diablo Stadium in a second round winners’ bracket game.

No. 6 Sahuarita 10, No. 11 Goodyear Estrella Foothills 4

No. 9 Ironwood Ridge 11, No. 8 Walden Grove 0, 5 innings

Ironwood Ridge (22-7-1) scored 11 runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull away to the run-rule win over host Walden Grove (19-8).

Juniors Angel Figueroa, Tristin McQuay, Brody Young and Clifford Graves each had two RBIs.

Senior Noah Peters (5-1) earned the win, allowing four runs in five innings with three strikeouts and a walk.

Senior Vaughn Sexton had two doubles for the Red Wolves.

Next: Ironwood Ridge will travel to No. 1 Queen Creek Crismon (24-3) on Monday at 4 p.m. for a second round winners’ bracket game. Walden Grove’s season has come to a close.

1A FIRST ROUND

No. 12 Superior 13, No. 5 San Manuel 4

San Manuel’s season came to a close at 14-9 with the home upset loss to Superior (7-17).

No. 7 St. David 9, No. 10 Anthem Prep 7

Senior Chase Pacheco hit a home run that was part of his 2-for-4 day with two runs and three RBIs.

The Tigers (12-8-1) forged ahead to a 9-7 lead after rallying for five runs in the fifth inning against visiting Anthem Prep (12-5).

Senior Cedar Haynie went 3 for 4 with a double and RBI and sophomore Clark Wilson was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Junior Emmitt Etter (3-0) was the winning pitcher.

Next: St. David will play Saturday at 4 p.m. in a quarterfinal game at No. 2 Mogollon (19-6).

No. 4 Williams 14, No. 13 Patagonia 1

Patagonia completed its season with a 9-11 record.

No. 2 Mogollon 11, No. 15 Baboquivari 1

Baboquivari concludes its season at 7-9.
