South Mountain, with seven Southern Arizona standouts, earns NJCAA Region I, Division II title

South Mountain Community College, which features seven players from Southern Arizona high schools, defeated visiting Chandler-Gilbert 12-8 on Friday to earn the NJCAA Region, Division II title.

The players from Southern Arizona with the Cougars, who are 44-16 after winning six of their last seven games:

C Ernie Alvarez, CDO

RHP Grant Young, CDO

RHP Denzel Montijo, Nogales

INF/OF Derek Montijo, Nogales

INF Jaden Leon, Tucson

OF/LHP Gennaro Brito, Tucson

RHP Izaiah Moraga, Salpointe

In the championship victory over Chandler-Gilbert, Brito was the starting pitcher and Denzel Montijo got the win in relief.

Brito allowed two hits and three runs in 4 1/3 innings with three walks and eight strikeouts.

Alvarez was 2 for 4 with a run and RBI.

South Mountain will advance to the NJCAA Division II regional tournament, one step away from the JUCO World Series.
