Sahuarita & Marana earn championships at Victory Sports Foundation’s passing tournaments

Sahuarita defeated Desert View 14-12 to earn the 7-on-7 title and Marana topped Sunnyside 16-6 in the flag football championship of the Victory Sports Foundation Passing Tournament on Thursday night at Kino South Park.

Late touchdown passes by Sahuarita quarterback Dane Hartnett and Marana quarterback Izzie Garcia proved to be the difference in each game.

Hartnett took over as the starting quarterback during his sophomore season last year after Rasheed Martin suffered a season-ending injury. Hartnett established himself as a playmaker who excels in both the passing and rushing games. In his first career start, he rushed for 120 yards and four touchdowns on 14 carries in a 40-3 victory over Nogales.

Desert View nearly pulled off a sweep of the Big Man and 7-on-7 competitions. The Jaguars earned the Big Man title Wednesday night on the first day of the event.

Garcia is coming off a freshman season in which she threw for 4,348 yards and 60 touchdowns, while adding another 704 rushing yards. Before high school, she was the starting quarterback for the Tucson Turf Elite 12U and 14U teams, and played in multiple NFL Flag National Championships.
