Behind the pitching of Zarina Badilla and a pivotal three-run fifth inning that included a two-run double by Sophia Auhl, San Xavier advanced to the state tournament with the hard-fought win over Copper Hills.
Badilla allowed 11 hits and six runs in her complete-game, six-inning effort, that included 12 strikeouts and two walks. She also was 3 for 3 at the plate with double and a run.
Auhl’s double in the fifth helped San Xavier pull away to a 7-4 lead.
Copper Hills rallied one last time in the bottom of the sixth but came up short.
A two-run triple with two outs by Alexia Ortega cut the lead to 7-6 before Badilla struck out the last batter.
The back-and-forth game included San Xavier and Copper Hills each scoring a run in the first and third innings and then both scoring two runs in the fourth.
Auhl and Briceyda Martinez each had two RBIs for San Xavier.
Ortega went 2 for 3 with a run and two RBIs and Meri Guzman was 3 for 3 with two runs and an RBI for Copper Hills.
