Abbey Rustand, the offensive coordinator for Arizona’s club flag football program, will coach Sabino’s first flag football team this fall, the school announced Wednesday.

Sabino will play as a 3A independent this season.

Rustand, a Class of 2019 Sabino graduate, is the daughter of Sabino girls basketball coach Eric Rustand and granddaughter of Arizona basketball great Warren Rustand.

Abbey, who was a cheerleader at Sabino who engaged in cheerleading competition, was the head coach of the Girls 12U White team that won a silver medal in the recent USA Football Summer Series at Los Angeles.

She plays the sport and was an ambassador for the non-profit Tucson Gridiron League. It is a competitive and recreational flag football and contact league that hosts year-round 5-on-5, 6-on-6, and 7-on-7 tournaments and divisions for men, women, co-ed, and youth players.

Abbey was also added Tuesday to the World Flag Series, the new professional platform for flag football. She will compete at WSF1 at Tampa, Fla., on July 25.

Salpointe alum Rylen Bourguet, who recently transferred to Nebraska from Arizona State to play on its first flag football team, will also compete in the WSF1.

Abbey started representing the U.S. in international competition in 2024 as a receiver.
