DEVELOPMENTS
— The release of veteran infielder Kevin Newman by the Kansas City Royals this week, means three former Arizona players were let go over the last two weeks — Newman, Scott Kingery by the Chicago Cubs and Jared Oliva by the New York Mets. This could be the end of the line for Newman, who played in the major leagues in eight different seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Los Angeles Angels. He was drafted in the first round (19th pick overall) by the Pirates in the 2015 MLB draft. He had 28 home runs in the big leagues with a .259 batting average in 672 games. His best season was in 2019 with the Pittsburgh Pirates when he batted .308 with 12 home runs and 64 RBIs in 130 games.
— Former Salpointe and Arizona standout Mason White connected on his first home run at the Double-A level on Sunday. The solo home runs was the 15th he’s belted this season (after recording 14 in Single-A+).
