Tanque Verde lost at Willcox 34-7 on Friday for the automatic bid for the state playoffs from the 2A South, and now the teams may meet again at Willcox in the postseason.
The Hawks (6-4) received a No. 14 seed in the bracket that was announced Saturday by the AIA. They will host No. 19 Phoenix Cortez (6-4) on Friday at 7 p.m.
Despite routing Tanque Verde, Willcox (10-0) dropped from No. 1 to No. 3. The winner of No. 14 and No. 19 plays No. 3 in the second round on Nov. 6. Therefore, Tanque Verde is looking at a potential return to Willcox. The Hawks must first get past Cortez, which is in the postseason for the first time in 21 years.
The top eight seeds earned a bye.
Eloy Santa Cruz Valley (8-2) is the No. 5 seed and will host the winner between No. 21 Chandler Lincoln Prep (7-3) and No. 12 Parker (9-1) in the second round Nov. 6.
Benson (8-2) earned a No. 6 seed. The Bobcats will host either No. 22 Morenci (5-5) or No. 11 St. Johns (7-3) in a second-round game Nov. 6. Morenci is a former member of the 3A South that includes Sabino and Pusch Ridge.
