Here we go. In just 47 days, the University of Arizona will take on BYU on Saturday, Sept. 3 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale. We will be honoring and listing 50 of the greatest high school football players from the state of Arizona (not just Southern Arizona) who went on to play for the Wildcats from today until kickoff.
This list honors high school achievements only. Some went on to have great careers with Arizona and in the pros but many did not. Some still hold Arizona high school records like our first honoree, Ted Bland.
This list is not a countdown from No. 50 to No. 1. That would be a nearly impossible task. Again, it’s not a list of the 50 greatest players with the greatest impact at Arizona. That list is for another day.
Day 47: Harry Holt, Sunnyside 1976: Arizona 1976-77.
Harry Holt opened up the “south side” to the University of Arizona and other major programs. Before there was a Fred Sims, a David Adams, a Jon Horton or a Xavier Smith, there was Holt.
Holt was a powerful running back and receiver for the Blue Devils and he was the first to pick Arizona, joining head coach Jim Young and Tony Mason. Holt was famous for scoring from several yards out by diving over the line on goal line situations.
Holt went on to play for the British Columbia Lions as a tight end from 1978-82 and was named to the 50th Anniversary Dream Team in 2007. He played for the Cleveland Browns from 1983–1986 and the San Diego Chargers in 1987.
