Jamarye Joiner was our 2014 Freshman of the Year when he was at Salpointe. He was also named to the MaxPreps Freshman All-American Team that year and he earned a spot at the Adidas Freshman All-American Bowl.
Joiner never played another down for the Lancers and was dismissed from the school twice in one year for confidential administrative reasons. After sitting out the 2015 season, Joiner found a home at Cienega and he helped lead the Bobcats to a 52-20 win over Marana on Friday night.
Joiner had 191 yards rushing on only eight carries against Marana and he collected 131 yards passing.
The Bobcats were 4-6 last year and Salpointe was 5-5. Both of the power programs failed to make the state playoffs but that will change this year. The Lancers are off to a 2-0 start and will benefit from a week off before hosting Tucson High (2-0) on Friday, Sept. 9 while Cienega (1-0) will visit Shadow Ridge (0-2) this Friday.
Circle Sept. 30 on your calendar because that Friday night is sure to be a media circus with Cienega traveling to Salpointe.
AllSportsTucson.com caught up with Joiner at the Rich Rodriguez 7-on-7 camp this past summer to get the first glimpse of the standout with his Cienega gear on. His presence on the Cienega roster made it a no-brainer to include the Bobcats on my preseason Top-10 team.
Joiner made a visit to the University of Arizona on June 5 and he was officially offered by the Wildcats on Saturday (Aug. 27) afternoon.
Joiner told AllSportsTucson.com that he is going to wait a bit before committing but he is obviously on a new level physically and emotionally.
“It’s just comforting that I’m back and have a good support system,” Joiner said. “Things are looking good we are very confident about this season.”
A probable at a few positions, Joiner was offered at the QB position by Arizona. After Sabino senior standout, and Arizona commit, Drew Dixon, Joiner appears to be the next big recruit out of Southern Arizona.
