Arizona Wildcats coach Rich Rodriguez is about to complete his fifth season in Tucson with Friday night’s home game against arch-rival Arizona State.

According to TucsonNewsNow.com and AllSportsTucson.com senior writer Anthony Gimino, a guest of NBC Sports 1060-AM this week, Rodriguez is really in Year One when factoring the transition after hiring new defensive coordinator Marcel Yates with a new group of young assistants who relate well with today’s recruits, particularly in California — defensive line coach Vince Amey, safeties coach Jahmile Addae and cornerbacks coach Donte Williams.

“He hit the reset button last year so this is really like Year One,” Gimino said referring to Rodriguez parting ways last season with veteran defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel and defensive line coach Bill Kirelawich, who were not dynamic recruiters, especially in the Los Angeles area.

“It’s hard to swallow that (Year One) because this is Year Five, but I think the self-correction has already taken place,” Gimino said. “Because of that, I definitely think you have to say, ‘Let’s see how this plays out for two years and give the next recruiting class the chance to show something.'”

Gimino also provided his opinion of Arizona’s matchup with ASU. Click the play button below to listen to the interview.
