Alexis Cortez (WAC)
Former Tucson standout and Utah Valley sophomore Alexis Cortez was named Western Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 8-14.
According to a WAC release, Cortez averaged 13.5 points per game with 7.5 rebounds per game as the Wolverines won a pair on the road at Kansas City and Chicago State. On Thursday, she put up career-high 16 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists and a steal in a 66-59 win against the Roos. She followed that up with 11 points and eight rebounds, also adding three steals, two assists and two blocks in a 68-30 blowout win at Chicago State. She was perfect on her free throws, going 7-for-7, and posted a 1.67 assist-to-turnover ratio on the week.
In the Wolverines’ first road win of the year at UMKC, Cortez helped the squad rack up a season-best 33 bench points in their come-from-behind victory. Just two days later, Cortez drained back-to-back three pointers in the first quarter at CSU that gave the Wolverines the lead for good after facing an early deficit.
Mikey Silva (SMCC)
Former Sunnyside standout Mikey Silva scored 31 points against Cochise this past week, earning him South Mountain Athlete of the Week honors.
