The NBA’s G-League Elite Mini-Camp that took place Monday and Tuesday at Chicago included former Arizona standout Nick Johnson rising above the competition, literally.
Johnson, who earned the G-League Finals MVP last month for leading the Austin Spurs to a title, recorded the highest max vertical jump of 39.5 inches in the camp that included 40 free agents showing their talent and skill in front of NBA executives and scouts.
Johnson also placed second in the four-way lane agility drill at 10.50 seconds, behind JeQuan Lewis’ 10.25 seconds.

Former Arizona post player Chance Comanche also took part in the elite mini camp and had the best reactive shuttle time of 3.06 seconds.
The players at the mini-camp also played in four games. Johnson was the fourth-leading scorer averaging 13.3 points a game. He made 44.7 percent of his shots from the field, including 50 percent from 3-point range.
Comanche, who went undrafted last year after leaving Arizona following two seasons, averaged 5.5 points and 5.3 rebounds in his four games. Comanche played this season with the Memphis Hustle, the G-League affiliate of the Memphis Grizzlies.
Johnson has played in one season in the NBA — 2014-15 with the Houston Rockets — after he was a second-round pick in 2014. He played in 2015-16 at Austin before playing professionally in Germany last season. He returned to Austin, the San Antonio Spurs’ affiliate, this season.
Based on his extreme athleticism, proven winning ability and improved skillset with a more accurate shot in his perimeter game, Johnson has a realistic chance of being part of an NBA team’s training camp in October.
