State Champion Coach Tom Joseph Returning to Alma Mater Salpointe to Coach Defense

Former Sunnyside assistant Tom Joseph, a Salpointe Catholic alum, is returning to his alma mater to be on the staff of coach Dennis Bene’s football team.

Joseph will help coach the Lancers’ defense. He has won a state title and made three title-game appearances as head coach of Mesa Mountain View from 2002 to 2010. Most recently, he was on the staff of Roy Lopez at Sunnyside. He became available when Lopez and Sunnyside parted ways.

Joseph has coached since 1980 when he started as an assistant at Rincon and then went to Salpointe before embarking on his head coaching career. He was also the head coach at Tempe Marcos de Niza, Superior and Tempe Corona del Sol. He has coached as a volunteer after retiring in 2014 following his stint at Corona del Sol.

Tom Joseph

Before coming to Sunnyside last season, Joseph was an assistant coach at Mesquite and Higley the previous three years.

“I’ve done all the things I’ve wanted to as a coach and I’ve been at schools where I’ve won,” Joseph said.

Joseph told me Tuesday that he plans to work with at-risk students in the Sunnyside School District while coaching his players at Salpointe.

“I want to help these kids any way I can,” Joseph said. “I’ve always been about taking on challenges.”
