Tucson came close to having a team competing in the Little League World Series at Williamsport, Pa., with Sunnyside reaching the West Regional final, but Southern Arizona was still represented there this weekend.
Tucson’s Valarie Scott and Sierra Vista’s Angelee Calderon took part in the inaugural T-Mobile Little League Home Run Derby at the BB&T Ballpark at Bowman Field at Williamsport. They went that far after advancing from the West Regional Finals at Seattle last weekend.

Scott, who played for Flowing Wells and Thornydale in the Continental Little League (District 5), tied for first place after the opening round with two home runs. She went as far as the semifinals.
Calderon, part of Sierra Vista’s team in Ponytail Little League (District 8), finished with one home run.
Javier Chávez of San Xavier Little League (District 12) took part in the baseball home run derby and reached the West Regional finals.
