Pima Community College’s softball team defeated host Chandler-Gilbert Community College 1-0 today to give coach Armando Quiroz his 500th career victory with the Aztecs.
Quiroz, a graduate of Tucson High School and NAU, is in his 11th season at Pima after coaching at Flowing Wells for six seasons.
The 500th-win milestone comes less than a week before Quiroz no longer coaches this season. He will undergo knee replacement surgery Wednesday.
“We don’t count when we’re coaching or winning. We don’t count,” Quiroz told The Arizona Daily Star. “The number 500 never occurred to me before.”
While he is out recuperating from the knee surgery, his daughter, Rebekah Quiroz, a standout player at Flowing Wells, Pima and Arizona, will take over the head coaching duties. She is the associate head coach.

Robert Campillo and Tony Rascon are assistant coaches. Gene Gonzales has been with the team as an assistant or volunteer for 24 years.
