Sunnyside, Nogales to Meet in Junior Little League State Championship Sunday Morning


Nogales set up a rematch with Sunnyside in the Junior Little League state tournament at Sierra Vista on Sunday at 9 a.m. by virtue of its 8-4 win over Western in an elimination bracket final on Saturday.

Sunnyside, unbeaten through the district and state tournaments, beat Nogales 13-2 on Thursday to reach the championship round.

Roman Basurto was the winning pitcher in that game for Sunnyside allowing only one hit in 3 2/3 innings with four strikeouts and two walks. He also was 2 for 4 at the plate with a double, run and three RBIs.

Nogales must beat Sunnyside twice on Sunday to win the championship. The action is at Arbenz Field at Sierra Vista.

In the win over Western on Saturday, Nogales was led by Alan Durazo at the plate and on the mound. Durazo pitched seven innings allowing eight hits with only one run earned. He struck out four and walked one.

At the plate, Durazo, the leadoff hitter, was 2 for 3 with a run and RBI. Uriel Quintero was 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs and Jerry Alcantar was 3 for 4 with a double, run and two RBIs.

One of the top performers for Western was Xavier Torres, who was 3 for 4 with three runs and two RBIs.
