Rincon/University QB Preston Silvas Awarded APS Digital Print/Tucson Conquistadores Player of Week

Rincon/University senior quarterback Preston Silvas embodies the growth of the Rangers’ program this year with his exploits.

His 217 yards rushing on 21 carries with a TD and two touchdown passes were significant in the Rangers’ 48-12 win over Empire.

The win puts Rincon/University (5-4 overall) in position to get only its second winning season in the last 13 years. The Rangers play at Cholla to conclude the regular season.

Silvas is the fourth-leading rusher in Southern Arizona with 1,200 yards on 165 carries with 15 touchdowns. He has also passed for 598 yards with nine touchdowns this season.

Second-year coach Mike Strack, who is instilling a winning culture with the program along with his staff, mentioned that Silvas might play some defense Friday against the Chargers as a linebacker or safety.

“He’s that good of an athlete,” Strack said. “He hasn’t played on the defense since I’ve coached here so he can concentrate on quarterback, but we know he is capable.”
