Sophomore wing player Emma Wall set a school record with 34 points in Tanque Verde’s 57-26 victory over visiting Arizona College Prep in the first round game of the Class 3A state tournament.
Wall’s scoring topped the former record of 32 points set by Lauren Pernu in the 2011-12 season.
Tanque Verde, with only eight players on its roster, coached by Michael Edwards, also earned its 24th victory of the season, setting a program record. The Hawks’ old record was 23 wins last season.
Another school-record in reach: Senior forward Emma Morris is approaching Nikya Orange’s season record of 454 points, set last season. Morris has 447.
Morris already has Tanque Verde’s record for made 3-pointers in a career (207) and also career scoring (1,312).
The 11th-seeded Hawks (24-6) next play in a second-round game at No. 6 Tuba City on Friday night.
Sabino, the No. 1 seed at 24-4, hosts No. 16 Valley Christian in the second round of the playoffs Friday. The Trojans defeated No. 17 Show Low 33-22 tonight behind Josie Bagley’s 12 points. Jada Pourier also had 10 points for the Trojans.
